Independent Contractor Policy
Last updated: May 20, 2026
You are an independent contractor
Workers on Bread & Butter Works are independent contractors, not employees, agents, partners, or joint venturers of Bread & Butter Works or 29 Innovations LLC. You decide which jobs to apply for, when you work, and how you complete the work. Bread & Butter Works does not supervise, direct, or control how you perform a job beyond what is described in the post and the in-app messaging.
No benefits, no withholding
Because you are an independent contractor, Bread & Butter Works does not provide employee benefits (health insurance, paid time off, unemployment, workers' compensation), and we do not withhold federal, state, or local income taxes, FICA, Medicare, or any other payroll tax from your payouts.
Your tax responsibilities
You are solely responsible for reporting your Bread & Butter Works earnings to the IRS and your state revenue agency, and for paying any income and self-employment taxes due. Most independent contractors are required to make quarterly estimated tax payments.
1099-K reporting
If you earn over the IRS reporting threshold in a calendar year on Bread & Butter Works, our payment processor (Stripe) will issue you a Form 1099-K and file a copy with the IRS. The federal threshold has changed in recent years; we follow the current IRS rule. Some states (including California) have lower thresholds. You are responsible for reporting all earnings, even if you do not receive a 1099-K.
Licenses, insurance & local law
Some jobs may require state or local licenses (for example, certain handyman, electrical, or childcare services). You are responsible for holding any required license, carrying appropriate insurance, and complying with all applicable laws. Do not accept jobs that require credentials you do not have.
